James Bay Community School Society

The James Bay Community School Society is an organization with active staff and board members who are committed to the development of community partnerships in order to provide programs and services that meet the changing needs of the community.

As the Heart of the Community we provide a neighbourhood gathering place for people of all ages and a strong voice for community leadership while understanding the unique qualities of James Bay.

Angela Cote // Member at Large

Angela Cote is a mother of two young children who attend the James Bay Community School, a residential neighbour and an active community member who is excited and honoured to be involved in contributing to enriching the lives of the adults and children of James Bay.  As owner of two local M&M Meat Shops (Royal Oak Shopping Centre and Tillicum/Burnside), she is fortunate to have the flexibility to share her time and sometimes business resources with the James Bay Community School Society.

Janice Matthews // Secretary

Janice Matthews has been a resident of James Bay for the past twelve years; for seven of those she was the principal of James Bay Community School. She loves the diversity of the people in James Bay, and she is committed to making sure the community continues to be a good place for children and their families.

Jason Armond // President

Jason Armond has been the President of the James Bay Community Society since 2007. He is a resident of James Bay and both his children have attended James Bay Community School. When he’s not volunteering at the Centre, he is busy with his career as an Information Technologies professional and computer programmer.

Joy Nugent // Board Member

Joy Nugent is a teacher and parent at James Bay Community School. Prior to teaching in the Greater Victoria School District, she taught in New York City and Vancouver, B.C. She also worked for many years at a Vancouver community school, leading and programming for the out-of-school-care service. Joy holds B.A. and B.Ed Degrees from UBC and recently completed her M.A. in Leadership through Royal Roads University. She conducted her Organizational Leadership Project in 2010 for her M.A. degree here at James Bay Community School and Centre. 

Kate Kerr // Vice Chair

Kate Kerr lives in James Bay with her two children who attend James Bay Community School and her husband, Grant. She is a strong believer in everyone’s role as community citizens and the power to make big changes from small beginnings. Employed at the Royal BC Museum, she has a background in the arts and small business and has enjoyed teaching and writing as continual side careers. She is excited to work with such a dynamic group of folk who make up the Board and Staff of James Bay Community Centre!

Misha Smart // Board Member

Misha Smart grew up on Piers Island surrounded by tall trees, sandy shores and a salty breeze.  She moved to Victoria to attend University and earn a Degree in Education, which she completed in the spring of 2011.  Misha is passionate about the important of fine arts within the school system and strives to provide students around Greater Victoria area with opportunities to engage in the arts.  Her art has been displayed in numerous art shows and she is a member of the Community Arts Council of Victoria.

 

Noah Alexander // Board Member

Noah was born in Toronto in 1974 and moved to Victoria when he was twenty. Noah works for the township of Esquimalt as the parks Arborist. He lives in James bay with my common-law wife, Melaina and their two daughters, Bella(6) and Roxy(3).  Noah's two daughters attend the James Bay Community School.  Noah and his family enjoy living in James bay because of the strong community feeling and spirit.

Paula Jardine // Board Member

Paula is an artist whose work focuses on community arts and the artists role in the community.  She believes a healthy community is a community that does creative things together.  A former James Bay Community School PAC member, both her daughters (now in their 20's) attended James Bay Community School.  Paula has served on the board for 6 years.

 

Susan Enefer // Treasurer

Susan happily lives in James Bay and currently works for British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC) helping to manage an $85 billion portfolio of assets and securities.  bcIMC ‘s investment activities help finance the pensions of university and college instructors, teachers, healthcare workers, firefighters, police officers, municipal and other public sector employees in our province.   

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Bachelor of Education degree.  She has also successfully completed the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) Director Education Program.
